OpenAI just destroyed VEO-3

This is the best AI video EVER...

If you thought VEO-3 videos were good, this is even better.

Earlier today OpenAI announced SORA-2, the newest version of their video generator.

And if the trailer is true to the software’s actual video generation abilities, this is by far the highest quality AI video production we’ve ever seen.

To the point it puts Google’s widely proclaimed VEO-3 to shame. That’s how good it is.

Who cares?

Here’s why we think SORA-2 is so important.

First, we’re getting closer and closer to AI-generated TV shows, series, and movies becoming a thing.

Between VEO-3, WAN 2.2 (which we covered here last week), and now SORA-2, it’s shocking how good AI-generated videos have become compared to 12-18 months ago.

And similar to how Grok, Gemini, and ChatGPT only keep getting better with each version release, AI video will never be worse than it is today.

The implications of this are vast.

While they’ve been discussed before, being able to generate studio-quality video from an AI program will affect everything from Hollywood to freelance videographers.

A couple examples include:

Everyday citizens being able to launch their own shows, series, and movies
The ability to generate custom B-Roll on demand for less than $1/video
Creators being able to launch studio-quality commercials as YouTube ads
Studios being able to edit/replicate scenes without needing to reshoot them
And more

The list goes on and on.

And given how viral VEO-3 went, we see SORA-2 becoming even more popular (as long as OpenAI keeps their pricing competitive relative to VEO-3).

Speaking of which, competition among models is a good thing.

When VEO-3 came out, it was light-years ahead of every other video generator. And because of that, there was no incentive for Google to drop the pricing on it.

But now that there’s a direct competitor (and not just one from China, but one Google is ferociously battling against here in the US), offering competitive pricing will be critical if they hope to prevent people from giving up VEO-3 in favor of SORA-2.

Third, the comments in response to OpenAI’s announcement are telling.

A large portion of them are highly critical, labeling SORA-2 as nothing more than a “soulless” slop generator, and a “solution looking for a problem.”

It reminds me of people who say things like “AI is a scam.”

What these Luddites fail to realize is that AI is still in its infancy.

Criticizing AI for not being good enough in 2025 is like criticizing the very first version of the WordPress drag-and-drop editor in 2005.

Fast forward to today, and WordPress powers 43% of all websites.

It’s the base layer for almost literally HALF of the entire Internet.

But getting there required them to go from the v1 they released in 2003 to the 6.8 version we currently enjoy today.

That’s a lot of iteration over multiple decades.

And rest assured: The same exact thing is going to happen with AI.

While these companies have been working behind the scenes for over a decade, it’s been less than three years since ChatGPT 3.5 - a text generator - went viral.

VEO-2 and SORA-1 were released 10 short months ago, in December of 2024.

For people to be so dramatically critical of these tools shows just how short-sighted they are. Make no mistake about it:

AI video generators will have a dramatic and lasting impact on all things video.

Yes, getting there will take a while.

But given how good VEO-3 and SORA-2 are, and given it only took them 10 months to upgrade from the previous version…

It’s likely we’re less than one year away from TV studios, video production teams, etc. all using AI-generated video for mainstream shows, series, commercials and movies.

So don’t sleep on this.
